Dust-binding impregnation of gravel, solid rail tracks and tunnel walls

Dust binding – for trouble-free commissioning

After construction is complete, building dust is stirred up by passing trains on newly completed track sections, for example those of the Deutsche Bahn, primarily in tunnels and station areas.

Even as early as the test runs, this dust turbulence causes huge problems and damage in terms of the safety and signalling equipment as well as the test trains.

The contamination results in high costs for cleaning and repairing the aforementioned equipment. In addition, the dust makes it difficult to keep to deadlines for the commissioning of entire sections.


Dust binding – to reduce harmful substances

When renovating tunnels (concrete demolition) and performing track and gravel work, dust deposits containing harmful substances (e.g. asbestos from brakes) can have implications for occupational health and safety.

In order to get to grips with this problem, dust-binding impregnation of the building structure and the gravel is demanded for an increasing number of renovation projects.

DMI has taken on this task and developed its “DMI Dust Control 150” product in collaboration with a large manufacturer. The material is sprayed on and binds the dust. The problems that usually occur are solved through the use of DMI Dust Control 150.

The material is environmentally friendly (expert report available) and has been given the required A2fl -s1 fire protection class.

DMI has carried out projects with the DMI Dust Control 150 material, such as

  • Rail connection for the major airport BBI in Berlin (approx. 65,000 m2)
  • Deutsche Bahn VDE 8.2 new track sections, Finne Tunnel (6.8 km), Bibra Tunnel (6.4 km), Osterberg Tunnel (2.0 km)
  • Deutsche Bahn VDE 8.1 new track sections, Sandberg Tunnel (1.9 km), Behringen Tunnel (0.74 km), Augustaburg Tunnel (1.69 km) Totalling approx. 24 km – 370,000 m2

with great success and solved customers’ problems.

The material can be applied with an automated spray device or by hand. For automated application, DMI has developed and built an evenly self-propelling spray device with data collection and computerised recording. The quantity applied can be recorded via a computer for both application options.
